about
I woke up on the Fourth of July, and I thought of my old friend Tim. He used to say, write and broadcast a phrase in college that always made me chuckle, "Hooray for America!" It was tongue-in-cheek, I assume. We were living in the "W. Bush" era, were still exhaling from 9/11 and becoming adults in an America that was increasingly bleak, violent and leading towards a great recession.
I wrote "Messiah Complex" when I was working at CPS. I was frustrated working under the new (also, extremely attractive... just saying...) CEO at the time. He came in, called things good and bad. Good people lost their jobs, and others didn't. My time working in Chicago's schools has been littered with a trail of Messiahs. So many people think they have the answers, and know nothing about the work we do on the ground.
Last week, my father reminded me of Galations 6:3, "For if anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. Let each one examine his own work, and then he will have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. For each one shall bear his own load."
Enjoy your life!
